I was one of many downtown folk who like to socialize out on the town, so when I discovered that I had a sensitivity to gluten, I immediately started wondering how I was going to eat! (Especially since most menus don’t come with ingredient lists). And what about those quieter nights (although few and far between) when I wanted to just stay in and watch Netflix? What would I cook? With all this change, I couldn’t help but feel a little lost and overwhelmed in beginning this lifestyle change.
The idea for Gluten Free Calgary (@gfyyc) came in 2012. Being an active Twitter user myself, I found I was using this social media tool for everything from making restaurant reservations to following local and national news everyday, and so I saw an opportunity.
The idea was to create a Twitter community of local Calgarians like myself that were living gluten free, so we could all share tips about where to go, what to eat, what to cook and where to shop. If nothing else, it would be a great resource for myself and hopefully, for others as well.
That little Twitter account has grown over the last couple of years and we are proud to be able to connect with people locally and internationally who are living gluten free!
We’ve created a great space to share recipe ideas from some of our favorite food bloggers, post about news, events, contests, and research from within our community. We also strive to promote gluten free menu items from local restaurants and encourage local restaurants to offer gluten free options!

I wear a lot of hats, and one of the most important ones is ``gluten-free advocate.`` I love seeking out and sharing the best ways those of us living a gluten-free lifestyle can find safe and delicious options. In my spare time, I love to hang out with my husband and nieces and sing in my awesome choir.
Amateur foodie, omnivore, and Grampy. Not celiac - but I get to cook for three celiacs in my house, including my wife, the love of my life. Life's too short to eat bad food, so my passion is to make gluten free taste as good as anything the rest of the world eats. (Doesn't always work, but I have a dream...)
Diagnosed with celiac disease in Sept 2013, I initially didn’t know where to turn! After getting over the shock that I’d never enjoy a pint of Guinness again, I reached out to the Calgary community via social media to find this site and a few others; but there's not a lot of info out there and sometimes it's confusing info to sift through. As someone who is always out on the town, trying new restaurants and travelling, I couldn’t be happier to be involved to help fellow celiac and GF people understand that life is not over – in fact, I’ve hardly skipped a beat. I now just pour my red wine into a pint glass to feel normal (kidding! Well, kind of….)
