May is just around the corner—our favourite month of the year! Why? Well, May is #CeliacAwarenessMonth. Celiacs are a big part of our gluten-free community and it’s terrific to bring some awareness to Celiac Disease and the importance of a gluten-free diet. We have a lot of things planned this month and we don’t want you to miss out on any of the fun!
But first up…
Celiac disease a very misunderstood disease. A lot of people think it’s all a fad and aren’t sure about the science behind it. But there certainly is! Simply put: For Celiacs, when gluten is present in their system, their immune system attacks their own body and wears down the villi in their small intestine making it harder for them to absorb the nutrients their body requires to be healthy. This can lead to an array of other illnesses and deficiencies.
Those with Celiac disease must maintain a strict gluten-free diet. They need to be especially concerned with cross-contimation as any particles containing gluten can severely damage their system.
We break down all the various reasons for eating gluten-free for you in the upcoming edition of the Amber Approved Magazine (make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss a beat).
Now, what have we got in store for you this month?
Starting May 1, we, in partnership with the Canadian Celiac Association, we will be giving away gift cards to local restaurants and delicious gluten-free products (all generously donated) via social media every day! Follow along at @CalgaryCeliac and @GFYYC on Twitter, as well as on both of our Facebook pages to participate! (Find them here: Canadian Celiac Association & Gluten Free Calgary)
Everyone in this community is dedicating to ensuring we do our part to provide education, so this month we are happy to see the CCA hosting webinars! Register now for any or all of the below. They’re absolutely FREE to attend! (Restaurants, why not register your whole team?) Can’t make it this date and time? That’s okay. All registrants will receive a copy of the webinar afterwards that you can watch later or refer back to.
