Vendome Cafe is a gluten-free cafe in the heart of Calgary. We sent one of our volunteers there to see what they have in store for our GF community!
Whenever I tell people I have Celiac disease, they turn their head slightly to the side and give me a sad look. The next thing they say, is “That’s got to be so HARD”. And the truth is, it’s been a pretty easy transition. The thing is, I have always had a secret weapon. I knew where to find the BEST GLUTEN-FREE FLOUR EVER!
reLISH is a brand-new addition to 124th Street, having opened on July 18 – we went in the 20th and again the 21st – and its red-and-white funky decor, enthusiastic staff give it a fun, friendly vibe. (Plus, the beer and wine available on its menu take it another notch up from your standard burger joint). We saw families dining there, as well as groups of young adults and couples, and I’m sure their take-out option will be very popular.
We’re counting down the days to the 2nd Annual Amber Approved Stampede Breakfast! This event took Calgary by storm last year, and it’s back, better than ever this time. Why? Because this time, in addition to scrumptious gluten-free (and dairy-free/sugar-free) food selections, there will be men for auction! *licks lips*
Now I’ve peaked your interest, haven’t I?
Meet all the bachelors and pick out your favourite. Then, on the day of the breakfast (with a belly full of amazing food), put your money where your mind is and bid for a dream date with your favourite guy! The best part? (Besides how many pull-ups these guys can do.) All the money raised goes to support Meals on Wheels.
*There is also a hidden promo code that each bachelor is happy to offer you in this link!
What else makes this Stampede breakfast unique? It’s not just healthy–it’s gourmet! The menu includes gluten-free pancakes, nitrate-free sausage, free-range eggs, fruit smoothies, organic juice shots, infused waters and more. Amber has partnered with Cru Juice and Screamin’ Brothers Ice Cream for some extras as well. *licks lips again*
“It’s always been a dream of mine to create a Stampede breakfast that brings delicious food to health conscious and gluten-free Calgarians,” says Holistic Nutritionist, Author and healthy food crusader Amber Romaniuk. “Last year’s sold-out event showed me how much it’s needed in this city.”Once again Amber collaborates with the team at Hotel Arts – award-winning Executive Chef Duncan Ly, Pastry Chef Karine Moulin who was seen on Top Chef Canada season four. These talented chefs will be creating the sumptuous breakfast creations.
Bring your girlfriends, your family or your team to this event on Wednesday, July 8th! There will be a live band, face painting, a photo booth and prizes… this is THE event not to miss this Stampede season, whether you’re gluten-free or not.
See you there with your boots on!
(P.S. Watch our Twitter and Facebook for a ticket giveaway coming soon!)
Psst… Remember that recipe contest we ran back in March? We are pleased to announce the winner was featured in the latest edition of the Amber Approved Magazine! Find the recipe for her “Paleo Birthday Carrot Cake” that is sure to have your mouth watering!
May is just around the corner—our favourite month of the year! Why? Well, May is #CeliacAwarenessMonth. Celiacs are a big part of our gluten-free community and it’s terrific to bring some awareness to Celiac Disease and the importance of a gluten-free diet. We have a lot of things planned this month and we don’t want you to miss out on any of the fun!
But first up…
My husband and I walked by Suzette Bistro one morning, not intentionally looking for some place to eat, we were just out for a walk with coffees in hand. I said to him that maybe we should just have a quick peek at what the menu looks like as I had heard about it from a friend. So we popped in, and were warmly welcomed by Gilles, who is also the owner of highly-acclaimed Cassis Bistro right next to Market 17 at the top of 17th Avenue.
Did you know our Founder also sits on the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association Board? Did you know she runs a social media marketing and design agency? (No wonder our social profiles are always buzzing!) Get to know Tessa May Marr, and hear about her passion for this community-powered organization. Learn the story of how Gluten Free Calgary began, as well as how we are participating in Calgary’s gluten-free community today.
We know our community is passionate and everyone is eager to share their favourite recipes within our community, so we want to give one lucky GFYYC community member the chance to be published!
You know our friend, Amber? The Holistic Nutritionist in Calgary that we love and adore? Well, she started her own magazine. And we think that’s cool. (Not to mention totally relevant for all of you!)
We’re more than half way through 2014 but it is not over yet! As winter takes over fall (which it’s already tried to do once), you’ll be staying warm and staying busy! There are so many fantastic events coming up and we don’t want you to miss any of them, so we’ve compiled a list here so that you can all mark your calendars.
Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending a nutritional workshop held by Beyond Nourished. I also live tweeted the event for GFYYC, sharing my thoughts on the whole experience. At the beginning of the workshop we all introduced ourselves and explained what brought us there. It was very interesting to hear peoples reasoning for coming, everyone came from many different pasts.
We’re super excited to announce that we Beyond Nourished will be hosting an amazing workshop in Calgary! We’re so excited that we decided to give away 2 FREE TICKETS with a little help from Gluten Free Calgary! If you haven’t attended one of our classes before you’re in for a treat!
I visited Tim’s Gourmet Pizza in Cochrane, AB with my boyfriend and brother. Although we have ordered take-out from here many times, we thought it was a good time to enjoy the sit-in experience. Many foodies are attracted to this small town for Mackay’s famous ice cream–hopefully after this post you will all be excited to visit Tim’s as well.
