It’s 4:25PM – 5 minutes to quitting time and it dawns on me… we have nothing in the house to make supper. The last thing I want to do it think about it. So I popped into the grocery store on the way home from work praying that something quick an easy would jump out at me.
For some reason a hearty Italian meal was calling my name. But I’ve been trying to make healthier decisions in the kitchen. So when I stumbled upon nuPasta I was intrigued.
I mean at 25 calories per package I figured it was worth a shot!
I already had a bunch of chopped up vegetables at home that I prepped for salads this week so all I needed to grab was ground beef and a jar of tomato sauce. In and out of the store in 5 minutes! BOOM!
At home, I start browning the ground beef.
When it’s just about cooked I throw in yellow peppers, mushroom and grape tomatoes.
Once the veggies have softened up I pour the bottle of sauce in and let it simmer.
In the meantime I drain and rinse the nuPasta as per the package directions.
I will warn you it does have a different smell – at least to me anyways. I thought it smelled like a mix of zucchini and a very mild fish. My husband said it smelled like pasta haha. The directions say to add the noodles directly to the sauce, heat and serve. I decided to give them a try after a couple of minutes… they needed more time. It tasted off. 10 minutes later the taste was much milder and absorbed a lot of the flavours from the sauce.
I’d give these noodles an 7 out of 10. They really were super easy to prepare – can’t complain when all you have to do is rinse. The smell made me dock points and the texture is a little off too. The fact that its so low in calories really catapulted it up the charts. At the end of the day I would rather gluten free Catelli or Barilla but I think everyone should give these a try! Bon Appetite!
EDIT: I purchased these at Save On Foods – I believe they were around $4/pk but I have also seen them on sale in the past so keep your eyes peeled 🙂
